Frequently asked questions
How many Shopify stores use the Express theme?
Store Detector detects Express on 204 active Shopify stores — <0.1% of the 296,690 stores in our index where a theme is detectable. That is a detection count from public storefront code, not a sales figure published by Shopify. Last updated Oct 12, 2026.
What kinds of stores use Express?
Mostly Food & Drink (78 stores), Beauty (13 stores), Health (11 stores). The full category split is on this page — useful for judging whether the theme suits a catalogue like yours.
Is Express still available?
Express is no longer listed on the Shopify Theme Store. It was one of Shopify's official free themes and is still running on 204 stores in our index, but new stores cannot install it from the Theme Store.
How is the theme detected?
Every store in the index is checked for the theme signature its storefront exposes publicly, which reports the theme's name and version. A store that has heavily customised or renamed its theme may report a custom name instead, in which case it is counted under that name rather than here. Full limitations are on our methodology page.
