We checked Shopify Plus adoption across 272,660 stores in 20 countries. Germany runs Plus at 14× the rate of South Africa, and Australia is nowhere near where its store count suggests.
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier — the one with the higher price, the extra checkout control and the sales rep. It is also the fastest available proxy for “this store is a real business”, which makes its distribution worth measuring.
So we measured it. Across the 20 countries we publish rankings for, our index holds 272,660 active Shopify stores, of which 3,268 are on Plus — just 1.2%.
That headline number is not the interesting part. The spread is.
Plus adoption by country

| South Africa | 4,698 | 6 | 0.13% |
Germany converts stores to Plus at fourteen times the rate South Africa does. That is a much wider gap than the difference in those countries’ ecommerce maturity would lead you to expect.
Australia is the outlier that matters
Australia is the second-largest market in our index by store count — 58,161 stores, more than double the UK’s 21,976. On Plus adoption it ranks fourteenth, at 0.40%.
Put those together: the UK has roughly a third of Australia’s stores and 47% more Plus stores in absolute terms (343 against 234).
The most likely explanation is composition rather than sophistication. A market that has grown quickly on small and mid-sized independent stores will show a low Plus rate even while doing a lot of volume, because the denominator is full of businesses that will never need enterprise checkout. Australia looks like a market with a very long tail.
If you sell to Shopify merchants, that distinction decides your go-to-market. A high-Plus market like Germany rewards a small number of enterprise conversations. A low-Plus, high-volume market like Australia rewards self-serve.
Europe over-indexes across the board
Six of the top seven countries by Plus share are European: Germany, Sweden, Spain, France, the UK and Belgium — with the US the only non-European entry, at fourth.
Given the US has by far the largest absolute number of Plus stores (1,593, or 49% of every Plus store in our index), it is easy to assume it leads on rate too. It does not. On rate it sits behind three smaller European markets.
What this does not tell you
A few honest limits, because they matter for how far you can push this:
- This is our index, not the Shopify platform. We hold 272,660 stores across these 20 countries. Shopify does not publish a store count, so treat these as proportions within a large sample rather than as census figures.
- Plus detection is signature-based. We detect Plus from what a storefront exposes. A Plus store that exposes nothing distinctive is counted as non-Plus, so if anything these rates are floors.
- Country is the store’s primary market, not where the company is registered. A US-incorporated brand selling mostly into Australia sits under Australia here.
Check any store yourself
Every figure above comes from the same index that powers the free ranking pages — each country page lists its store count and Plus count at the top, and exports to CSV. If you want to check a single store rather than a country, the Shopify Store Detector tells you in one click whether a site runs Shopify, and the extension shows Plus status on the store itself.
